Rushing to Execute: Why travel brands must build the foundations first.
When you dig into why these brands struggle to scale, the root cause is often the same. It’s not a lack of effort, and it’s often not a lack of budget. It’s a fundamental structural failure: they rush straight into execution without doing the basic foundational planning and thinking.
1. Strategic Thinking
Before you touch a campaign brief or post a single reel, you have to answer the hard questions. What unique problem does your travel brand actually solve for the traveller? Who is your core audience? What makes your experience or product distinct, and why should anyone choose you over one of your competitors? Strategy defines your brand’s true reason for existing. Without it you risk lacking the focus and clarity that you are going to need in the later stages of your marketing execution. (ie the execution has a greater chance it's going to fail!)
2. Alignment
Once your strategy is clear, get everyone on the same page. Your marketing team, product designers, and on-the-ground local guides cannot operate in silos. Alignment ensures that the promises made in your marketing campaigns actually match the real-world experience delivered during the booking process, during the journey or at the destination. Whatever it is, your product is promising to deliver. Does it work? Is this what we actually deliver.
3. Planning
Only after the strategy is defined and the team is aligned can you map out the promotional roadmap and campaign machinery. Good marketing solves a problem or fulfills a need or desire, without this clarity, your brand risks fading into a sea of sameness and becoming somewhat irrelevant.
4. Execution
This is the final step: pushing ad campaigns live, running your CRM programme, building partnerships, creating brand assets.
The Real Problem: The Urgency Trap
The trap I see some brands fall into is jumping straight into execution.
There is an overwhelming pressure to move fast. Many have a perishable product, as a cruise cabin needs selling, a hotel room needs filling. Brands panic, throw money at performance ads, launch random campaigns to see what sticks. If it doesn't then we start price discounting to chase reduced margin bookings to hit short-term targets and fill seats/beds and holidays before they go empty. Many completely bypass Strategy and internal Alignment.
It’s painful to watch because these companies spend millions of pounds running faster and faster. But executing without a strategy doesn't mean you're making progress. If you want to build a brand that lasts, stop trying to shortcut the foundation. Fix the core strategy first, align your team, plan the machine, and then execute. From my experience, the result is a whole lot better.
